Kawaguchiko, Japan – Malaysia’s household spending is on track for solid expansion throughout 2025, according to a new report by BMI Country Risk & Industry Research, a unit of Fitch Solutions. Despite growing debt concerns and global economic uncertainty, the outlook remains positive, supported by strong domestic fundamentals.

Economic Indicators Point to Consumer Strength

The report projects household spending to increase by 5.2 percent year-on-year in real terms, reaching approximately RM943.7 billion. This growth rate represents a return to pre-pandemic levels, matching the average real growth observed from 2015 to 2019.

“This stable growth outlook is underpinned by a low inflationary environment and a stable labour market,” BMI stated in its key findings.

Employment Stability Boosts Consumer Confidence

Malaysia’s unemployment rate held steady at a multi-year low of 3.1 percent in February 2025, significantly contributing to consumer confidence. BMI forecasts this rate will remain at 3.1 percent throughout 2025, bolstered by foreign investment and a recovering tourism sector.

Purchasing Power on the Rise

Real purchasing power is improving notably, with average households expected to be 8 percent better off in 2025 compared to 2019 levels. Several factors are contributing to this improvement:

  • Moderate inflation, forecast to average 2.4 percent, which remains low enough to preserve purchasing power
  • A tight labor market translating wage growth into improved disposable incomes
  • A strengthening Malaysian ringgit, projected at RM4.5/USD in 2025, making imports more affordable for consumers

Tourism Recovery Adds Further Momentum

The report highlights that Malaysia’s recovering tourism industry provides additional support to consumer spending, particularly in the retail sector. Recent retail sales data from February 2025 shows figures close to the 2024 monthly average, indicating stability in consumer behavior.

Long-Term Positive Outlook

Looking beyond 2025, BMI anticipates a steady increase in consumer spending continuing through 2029. The combination of macroeconomic stability, improving household incomes, and controlled inflation creates favorable conditions for sustained growth in Malaysia’s consumer market.

This positive outlook for household spending suggests Malaysia’s domestic economy will remain resilient despite external challenges, positioning the country for continued economic progress in the coming years.
