JAKARTA – A new halal dining establishment is preparing to transform the local culinary landscape with an innovative blend of South Asian flavors and American favorites.

Baithak of Punjab, scheduled to debut this summer at 4252 S. Howell Avenue, represents more than just another restaurant opening. The name itself carries cultural significance – “baithak” in Hindi refers to a communal space where people gather to share meals, conversations, and build relationships.

Cultural Concept Meets Modern Dining

Ahmad Shahzad, the entrepreneur behind this venture, is developing a concept that honors traditional South Asian hospitality while embracing contemporary dining trends. The establishment will feature an innovative “sober bar” concept, offering craft non-alcoholic beverages, mocktails, fresh-pressed juices, and specialty drinks that complement the dining experience without alcohol.

The restaurant is taking over the space previously occupied by Marsel’s Pizzeria, whose owner Marsel Feto confirmed the transition as he redirects his attention to other business interests, including Bar 920 in South Milwaukee. Feto expressed hopes of eventually reopening his pizzeria concept at a different location.

Bridging Culinary Traditions

In a thoughtful nod to the location’s history, Baithak of Punjab plans to incorporate New York-style pizza into its diverse menu offerings. However, these pizzas will feature distinctly halal ingredients, including options like chicken tikka, garden vegetable, and halal beef pepperoni varieties.

The menu extends far beyond pizza, showcasing an ambitious fusion of Pakistani and Indian cuisine alongside American comfort food. Appetizer selections will range from traditional samosas and masala-spiced okra to familiar favorites like onion rings and garlic bread.

Diverse Menu Offerings

The main course selection reflects the restaurant’s commitment to serving both communities – those seeking authentic South Asian dishes and diners looking for familiar American options. Traditional offerings will include rich butter chicken and palak paneer, while American staples like cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets will also be available.

The heart of the menu focuses on classic South Asian specialties, featuring various meat biryanis prepared with aromatic spices, char-grilled kebabs, and slow-simmered nihari – a traditional stew known for its complex flavors and tender meat.

Dessert options will span both culinary traditions, from traditional South Asian sweets like gulab jamun and carrot halwa to American classics such as New York-style cheesecake.

Halal Certification and Standards

All food items will meet zabiha halal standards, ensuring compliance with Islamic dietary requirements as specified in the restaurant’s licensing application. This certification addresses the growing demand for halal dining options in Milwaukee’s diverse community.

Location and Operations

The 2,685-square-foot space includes an attractive sidewalk patio that overlooks the busy Howell Avenue corridor, providing outdoor dining opportunities in Milwaukee’s southside neighborhood.

The restaurant has submitted its licensing application to Milwaukee city officials and awaits approval. If granted, Baithak of Punjab plans to operate with extended hours from 7 a.m. to midnight daily, accommodating breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night dining preferences.

Community Impact

This new establishment represents the growing diversity of Milwaukee’s restaurant scene and the increasing recognition of halal dining as a significant market segment. The fusion approach demonstrates how immigrant entrepreneurs are creating innovative concepts that bridge cultural traditions while appealing to broader audiences.

The restaurant’s emphasis on creating a “baithak” – a true gathering place – suggests it aims to become more than just a dining destination, potentially serving as a community hub that brings people together across cultural lines.

As Milwaukee continues to evolve as a diverse metropolitan area, establishments like Baithak of Punjab highlight how food serves as a universal language that can unite communities while celebrating distinct cultural heritage.
