Kawaguchiko, Japan – In a significant development for Bangladesh-Singapore trade relations, Singaporean investors have highlighted the untapped potential of halal-certified agricultural products from Bangladesh during high-level talks in Dhaka. The roundtable discussion, titled “Investment Climate in Bangladesh and Singapore-Bangladesh Business Opportunities,” took place at Eastern Bank PLC’s headquarters on April 9, 2025, coinciding with the Bangladesh Investment Summit 2025.

Strategic Advantages of Halal Certification

Derek Loh, Singapore’s Non-Resident High Commissioner to Bangladesh, specifically emphasized how halal certification could provide Bangladeshi agricultural producers with a competitive edge in the Singaporean market. He noted that Singapore’s substantial Muslim community shows strong preference for halal-certified products, creating a ready market for properly certified Bangladeshi goods.

“The demand for halal-compliant food extends beyond Singapore throughout Southeast Asia and other regions with significant Muslim populations,” Loh explained during the discussions. This certification approach could help Bangladesh expand its agricultural export reach both regionally and globally.

Strengthening Bilateral Economic Relations

The event brought together key business figures and investors from Singapore, demonstrating increasing interest in Bangladesh’s economic potential. As Bangladesh approaches graduation from Least Developed Country status in November 2026, partnerships with established trading partners like Singapore are becoming increasingly vital.

Zakir Hossain Chowdhury, Deputy Governor of Bangladesh Bank, expressed the central bank’s commitment to creating a robust financial ecosystem aligned with global standards to support growing bilateral trade and investment flows.

“Bangladesh Bank views Singapore not merely as a valued trade partner, but as a strategically important ally in our collective pursuit of sustainable development,” Chowdhury stated, highlighting the potential for collaborative financial innovation.

Bangladesh as Gateway to South Asia

Md. Hasan Abdullah Towhid, Director of the South East Asia Wing at Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, positioned Bangladesh as offering Singaporean investors access to a substantial consumer market, a skilled young workforce, and competitive manufacturing costs.

He emphasized Bangladesh’s strategic geographical location as a crucial gateway for Singaporean businesses seeking to penetrate the broader South Asian market. Simultaneously, Bangladesh aims to leverage Singapore’s established strengths in finance, urban planning, logistics, and technology.

Towhid specifically welcomed increased Singaporean investment in manufacturing, infrastructure development, information technology, renewable energy, and the financial sector—all critical components in Bangladesh’s vision for a digitally-driven economy.

Leveraging Singapore’s Logistics Hub

Participants discussed how Singapore’s position as a leading global logistics hub could facilitate the entry of Bangladeshi agricultural products into ASEAN, East Asian, and Oceania markets. Singapore’s world-class ports and air cargo facilities offer reliable and cost-effective pathways for Bangladeshi exporters, particularly important for perishable agricultural goods where timely transportation is essential for maintaining quality.

Eastern Bank’s Role in Cross-Border Investment

Ahmed Shaheen, Additional Managing Director of Eastern Bank, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to facilitating international investment through tailored financial solutions designed to streamline cross-border transactions. He advocated for establishing a dedicated Singapore desk within EBL’s operational framework to enhance the existing partnership.

“Such a dedicated unit would significantly unlock promising avenues for collaborative ventures across various sectors,” Shaheen noted, highlighting the success of similar specialized desks for other international partners.

Expanding Beyond Agriculture

While agricultural products received particular attention, discussions also explored other promising sectors for Singaporean investment in Bangladesh:

  • Manufacturing opportunities for production diversification
  • Infrastructure development in energy, transportation, and telecommunications
  • Information technology partnerships leveraging Bangladesh’s growing pool of skilled professionals
  • Renewable energy initiatives where mutual expertise could be beneficial
  • Financial sector collaboration supporting growing trade flows

The potential for collaboration in urban planning and technology transfer was also highlighted, with Singapore’s experience in managing modern urban centers offering valuable insights for Bangladesh’s rapidly urbanizing landscape.

Path Forward for Bangladesh-Singapore Cooperation

The roundtable underscored the mutual benefits stronger economic ties would generate. Singaporean investors gain access to a high-growth market with increasing purchasing power, while Bangladesh can leverage Singapore’s capital resources, technological expertise, and global networks to accelerate economic development.

To fully realize the export potential of Bangladeshi agricultural products to Singapore, participants identified several priority areas:

  • Implementing modern agricultural production techniques
  • Improving post-harvest handling and storage infrastructure
  • Investing in quality control and international certification processes
  • Developing efficient transportation and logistics systems
  • Creating targeted marketing and effective branding strategies

The commitment expressed by both Singaporean investors and Bangladeshi authorities signals a promising outlook for future economic relations between the two nations, with halal certification serving as a potential catalyst for broader trade expansion.
