Trade Leaders Celebrate Breakthrough in Regional Commerce

Pakistan has arranged to export 143,000 tons of halal meat to Tajikistan in a deal valued at approximately $14.5 million, marking a significant expansion in bilateral trade relations between the two nations.

Business Community Acknowledges Diplomatic Efforts

Leadership from the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) and various Chambers of Commerce commended the contributions of Tajikistan’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Yusuf Sharifzoda Toir, for advancing export opportunities in the halal meat sector.

Speaking with APP, Atif Ikram Sheikh, President of the Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, emphasized the substantial opportunities within the halal meat industry. He noted that Pakistan’s planned shipment of 143,000 tons valued at $14.5 million to Tajikistan will broaden trade in halal products and strengthen overall commercial ties between both regional partners.

Sheikh projected that bilateral trade could potentially reach $500 million in upcoming years, with business communities from both nations serving crucial roles in connecting high-potential sectors.

Islamabad Chamber Emphasizes Strategic Partnership

Sardar Tahir Mehmood, President of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, characterized Tajikistan as a significant trading partner for Pakistan with considerable potential across multiple sectors, including halal trade and agricultural products.

Mehmood praised Ambassador Yusuf Sharifzoda Toir for his instrumental role in expanding bilateral commerce and establishing a forward-looking vision for strengthening economic connections between the two countries.

The export initiative specifically targets halal meat, primarily addressing Tajikistan’s requirements after the country previously indicated interest in approximately 100,000 tons.

The ICCI President described this agreement as a component of comprehensive efforts to elevate Pakistan-Tajikistan bilateral trade up to $500 million through enhanced trade facilitation, improved logistics infrastructure, and potential preferential trade arrangements.

Educational Cooperation Advances Alongside Trade

Beyond commercial activities, both nations are progressing educational collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) facilitating student and teacher exchanges, with particular emphasis on medical education programs.

Lahore Chamber Advocates for Preferential Trade Framework

Faheem ur Rehman Saigol, President of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, identified a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) between Pakistan and Tajikistan as an urgent necessity to promote trade liberalization between both parties, stressing how trade liberalization contributes to regional economic integration.

Saigol highlighted that reestablishing direct air service between the two countries would significantly enhance not only economic and trade relationships but also cultural connections. He emphasized that resuming these flights would stimulate economic and commercial activities while encouraging reciprocal tourism between Pakistan and Tajikistan.

Rawalpindi Chamber Stresses Regional Integration

Usman Shaukat, President of the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI), affirmed that Tajikistan remains a crucial trade partner for Pakistan, essential to regional economic integration. He noted that Central Asian nations like Tajikistan hold vital importance for Pakistan, with both countries prepared to strengthen future economic and trade partnerships.

Shaukat acknowledged Tajikistan’s impressive 8 percent annual GDP growth rate and advocated for business delegation exchanges between both sides to enhance bilateral economic relations.

Pakistan’s Halal Meat Production Capacity

The policy framework aims to increase Pakistan’s presence in global halal markets, particularly among Muslim-majority nations, by improving livestock productivity, cold storage facilities, and adherence to international standards.

Pakistan generates approximately 6 million metric tons of halal meat annually, with surplus quantities available for export after satisfying domestic consumption requirements.

Implementation Timeline and Strategic Context

Ministry of Commerce officials have characterized the exports as either commencing or materializing “in the near future,” while others present it as a planned or secured arrangement. This initiative supports Pakistan’s strategic expansion into Central Asian markets and complements similar outreach efforts to countries including Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Gulf states for meat and rice exports.
