Canadian Government Funds Halal Beef Packaging and Processing Upgrades

| By Packaging Gateway

The Canadian government has committed C$2.26 million to support improvements in halal beef processing and packaging at Atlantic Beef Products Inc. (ABPI) in Prince Edward Island, aiming to expand certified production capacity and reinforce Canada’s domestic supply chain.

The investment is delivered through the Kosher and Halal Investment Program, a federal scheme that encourages federally regulated beef and veal processors to adopt modern technologies. According to the official announcement, the funding will be used to modernize processing operations and packaging systems at ABPI’s Albany facility.

Planned upgrades include the installation of steam vacuum equipment to enhance hygiene standards, more efficient cutting and meat recovery tools to minimize waste, and new packaging solutions designed for retail-ready halal products. An in-line X-ray analyzer will also be introduced to strengthen food safety monitoring and quality assurance.

The government describes the initiative as part of a broader effort to help processors respond to changing market needs, support regional businesses, and improve the resilience of Canada’s food production system. Through the Kosher and Halal Investment Program, beef processors are encouraged to increase efficiency while expanding halal and kosher product offerings.

ABPI currently operates as the only federally registered beef processing facility east of Quebec and has the capacity to process up to 750 cattle per week. With this funding, the company is expected to better meet rising domestic demand for halal-certified beef and explore opportunities in export markets. Higher product yields and improved packaging capabilities are also anticipated to benefit both retail and foodservice distribution channels.

Federal officials noted that the investment aligns with the Buy Canadian Policy, which prioritizes domestically produced goods in public procurement and supports the participation of Canadian industries. More broadly, the initiative reflects global growth in the halal food sector, driven by increasing Muslim populations and consumer demand for certified, traceable products.

For supply chain and packaging stakeholders, such investments highlight wider industry trends focused on compliance, transparency, and product differentiation. This funding forms part of Canada’s ongoing strategy to modernize food processing infrastructure and strengthen value chain integration across regions.
