JAKARTA – Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, is preparing an extraordinarily large offer worth 10 billion euros (equivalent to Rp195.5 trillion) to take over ownership of Barcelona. This ambitious move is part of the Middle Eastern kingdom’s strategy to expand its influence in international sports, following previous successful entries into Formula 1 and boxing.

New Ambition After Domestic League Falls Short

Despite bringing in major stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Sadio Mane, and N’Golo Kante to their local league, Saudi Arabia’s football competition has still not managed to break into the world’s elite leagues. Currently, the league only ranks within the top 30 best global competitions, far behind the European and South American leagues that dominate.

Recognizing this reality, the Prime Minister and future king of Saudi Arabia has decided to change strategy by targeting direct investment in established European clubs, particularly in Spanish competition.

Targeting League-Leading Barcelona

Spanish journalist Francois Gallardo from El Chiringuito reports that a 10 billion euro offer is being prepared for the Catalan giants who currently sit atop the La Liga standings. Barcelona’s valuation is estimated at around 4.1 billion pounds sterling, placing it as the third most valuable club on the planet.

The offer amount is highly significant considering bin Salman’s personal wealth reaches 18.7 billion pounds sterling, not including royal family assets including ownership in Saudi Aramco, estimated to reach 1 trillion pounds sterling.

Transformation of Barcelona’s Financial Power

Unlike Real Madrid, PSG, or Manchester City, Barcelona, which is managed through a socio ownership system (club members), has historically faced financial limitations. Should this acquisition materialize, the Blaugrana will instantly become the wealthiest football entity in the world, surpassing the financial backers of Paris FC and Newcastle United.

This grand plan marks a potential new era for Barcelona that could fundamentally transform the competitive landscape of European football.
