JAKARTA – Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is set to attend and deliver a speech at the annual Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh this week, marking another significant step in his efforts to reintegrate Syria into the international community following a 14-year conflict.

According to two informed sources who requested anonymity, President al-Sharaa is scheduled to address the conference on Tuesday. Neither the Syrian presidency nor the Saudi government communication center has responded to requests for comment at this time.

Rebuilding International Relations

Since assuming power following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad approximately 10 months ago, al-Sharaa has undertaken a series of foreign trips as his transitional government works to restore Syria’s relationships with global powers that maintained distance from Damascus during Assad’s rule.

Saudi Arabia has played a pivotal role in this diplomatic rehabilitation process. In May, Riyadh hosted a historic meeting between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, al-Sharaa, and US President Donald Trump, who praised the Syrian leader and announced Washington’s decision to lift all sanctions imposed on Syria to support the country’s reconstruction efforts.

Massive Reconstruction Challenge

The World Bank has estimated reconstruction costs at approximately $216 billion. Al-Sharaa, who has repeatedly urged global powers to contribute to rebuilding efforts, will address a gathering of prominent economic and political figures at the Riyadh conference.

This appearance represents a crucial opportunity for Syria’s new leadership to showcase its vision for the country’s future and secure international support for reconstruction and economic recovery. The Future Investment Initiative conference serves as a premier platform for fostering global investment partnerships and economic dialogue.
