Market Expansion

Following a successful Taiwan Tourism Workshop 2025 in Bandung, the promotional campaign continued at Jakarta’s Pullman Hotel in Central Park. This multi-city approach demonstrates Taiwan’s serious commitment to expanding its tourism presence throughout Southeast Asia, with Indonesia identified as one of the most promising markets in the region.

Taiwan’s tourism expansion strategy receives comprehensive support from the Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO) in Indonesia, highlighting the government-level commitment to strengthening tourism ties between the two countries.

Strategic Tourism Development Plans

Abe Chou, Director of Taiwan Tourism Information Center (TTIC) in Jakarta, outlined Taiwan’s primary focus areas for attracting Indonesian tourists. The strategy emphasizes collaboration with airlines to establish direct flight connections, reducing travel distances and improving overall accessibility for Indonesian travelers. Taiwan is also developing diverse tourism package offerings that include family-oriented tours, educational graduation programs, authentic Taiwanese culinary experiences, expanded tourist destination coverage, and seasonal themed attractions and activities.

Expanded Destination Portfolio

While Taipei City remains a central attraction, Taiwan is actively promoting diverse destinations to Indonesian tourists including the Alishan mountain region, Sun Moon Lake scenic area, and Kenting coastal destination. The country offers seasonal tourism experiences that allow visitors to enjoy the summer-to-fall transition featuring the Air Balloon Festival in Taitung, experience winter hot springs, and celebrate year-end fireworks celebrations and festivals.

Tourist Incentive Programs

To encourage independent travel, Taiwan has introduced the Taiwan Lucky Land program, offering Indonesian tourists the opportunity to win 5,000 Taiwan dollars through a lottery system. Participation requires only registration at least three days before arrival, making it accessible to both organized tour groups and independent travelers.

Diplomatic and Policy Support

Trust Lin, Deputy Representative of TETO in Indonesia, emphasized the organization’s function as a bridge for tourism diplomacy between the two countries. The organization provides comprehensive support services including exhibition and roadshow organization, media promotion campaigns, and serves as a collaboration platform for travel agents, airlines, and industry stakeholders from both countries.

The Taiwanese government is actively reviewing and reforming policies to facilitate Indonesian tourist entry through the expansion of e-visa services, simplified group visa procedures through travel agents, and potential implementation of visa-free or easier entry programs. The primary objective is reducing entry barriers and enhancing comfort for Indonesian tourists throughout their travel experience.

Market Performance

As of 2024, Indonesian tourist arrivals to Taiwan reached 220,000 visitors, representing a significant contribution to Taiwan’s tourism industry. Indonesia ranks among the top three Southeast Asian markets contributing the highest number of visits to Taiwan. Indonesian tourists represent a strategic demographic due to their growing young and middle-class populations, increasing disposable income for international travel, and cultural interest in Asian destinations.

Halal Tourism Development

Taiwan is intensifying its development of halal tourism services specifically designed to serve Indonesia’s predominantly Muslim market. This includes halal-certified dining options, prayer facilities at tourist destinations, culturally sensitive accommodation services, and Muslim-friendly tour packages and experiences.

Future Growth Projections

Industry experts predict substantial growth in Indonesia’s tourism market to Taiwan over the next 3-5 years, driven by improved flight connectivity and accessibility, expanded Muslim-friendly services and infrastructure, enhanced promotion of Taiwan’s cultural and natural attractions, and streamlined visa and entry processes.

Trust Lin expressed confidence in Indonesia’s potential, stating that the country is expected to become one of the main contributors to Taiwan’s tourism growth. This optimism reflects the combination of policy improvements, infrastructure development, and targeted marketing strategies designed to serve Indonesian travelers’ specific needs and preferences.

Conclusion

Taiwan’s comprehensive approach to attracting Indonesian tourists through halal tourism represents a strategic shift toward inclusive, culturally-sensitive tourism development. By addressing accessibility, cultural requirements, and diverse interests, Taiwan positions itself as an attractive alternative destination for Indonesian travelers seeking international experiences that align with their cultural and religious values.
